Thousands of workplace eye injuries are reported every year in Canada. The most serious of these result in blindness. A significant number of eye injuries sustained on the job occur in the construction industry. The vast majority (90%) of workplace eye injuries can be prevented with proper eye protection and safety measures. That’s one of the key messages of the CNIB Eye Safety Workshop. Eye injuries can be eliminated. To reinforce this message, CSABC is partnering with CNIB to offer this workshop to construction industry employers and workers across the province.

Description

This CNIB workshop is designed to educate workers about eye safety and motivate them to follow safe work practices. Delivered by a facilitator with vision loss, the workshop is the first of its kind in Canada. Dramatic eye injury photographs and interactive exercises, combined with real-life stories, give participants a sense of how it feels to suddenly be faced with vision loss.

The 90-minute workshop consists of the following learning components:

Lesson 1 Lesson 2 Lesson 3

Learn about vision loss from someone who experiences it every day, hear the instructor’s personal story about living with vision loss, and have the opportunity to ask questions

Learn about the consequences of eye injuries resulting from a variety of workplace activities and industries
Participate in hands-on activities to get a sense of how it feels to face the challenges of vision loss

This workshop is intended for construction industry workers and employers, and may also be of interest to joint health and safety committee members, worker health and safety representatives, and health and safety professionals who are committed to preventing occupational eye injuries.
